Thirty's the new Twenty

So on Saturday night, I was invited to my cousin Steve's surprise 30th birthday. Okay, so he's not exactly my cousin, our dads are cousins, but whatever. Close enough in my world.

Anyway, I showed up with the birthday boy's sister, Shelley (who came down from Ottawa), and their (real) cousin from their mum's side of the family, Steph, who also lives in TO. I guess she's my cousin as much as the other two, really. I have no idea about this family tree stuff.... I just call them cousins, knowing that technically they aren't really.... Whatever.

Shelley, Steph and I brought two giant bottles of red wine. Pretty decent stuff, too. We arrived around 3pm, and the first one was gone by about 4:30. Granted, it was between three of us, but we were hammering it down. The other bottle was practically gone by supper, and they were even involved with making some of the food! You'd never guess that we don't often get the chance to hang out away from our parents, huh?

There was a couple there (Steve's friend from home and his wife, who live in the Toronto area now) with their baby daughter, who turned out to be three months old...

Steph: How old do you think that kid is?
Shelley: Definitely less than three.

You'd never guess Shelley teaches high school, huh?

Anyway, it was really nice to see some of my, admittedly small, family outside of a classic "family holiday" kind of atmosphere.

Needless to say, it was Steve still getting rounds for us as the last of the guests were leaving or hitting the hay (everyone was crashing at his gf's dad's place)... so I guess being the last to bed just kinda runs in our family.

Good to know. :)
