No, I wholeheartedly disagree with that statement.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with Vince Carter taking off the morning of Game 7 of the Eastern Semis in 2002 to get his degree from the University of North Carolina. The idea that any basketball game (regardless of the fact that it was - oooooh! - the playoffs) should take precedent over education under any circumstances is ridiculous. In contrast, I would actually suggest that the fact he went back to complete his degree after leaving for the NBA having only completed three years, and was now financially set for life should be applauded.
I covered why I dislike Vince below, but attending his convocation the morning before playing a basketball game five years ago is not one of them.
